Michael grew up in Saint Louis, Missouri, and he ran track and cross country in high school. He struggled with chronic overuse injuries and was never very competitive. Nevertheless, Michael enjoyed running and he continued to casually run for health, fitness, and stress relief. In 2016, Michael decided to run the GO! St. Louis Marathon. He took the plunge and went all the way from the 10K to the full marathon. His first “half marathons” were long runs during marathon training. After successfully completing training and the marathon injury-free, Michael was hooked on endurance running. In 2017, he completed the Run the Year challenge, running 2,017+ miles during calendar year 2017. This included completing 4 marathons that year. Michael participates in races for fun and rarely “races” an event. He plans to run a half marathon or longer in every state, and he is making good progress toward that goal. Michael also enjoys cycling, and has completed a few multisport events and some longer bicycle rides. Each year he raises money for charity in conjunction with one or more marathons or endurance cycling events. In addition to running and cycling, Michael also enjoys other outdoor endeavors. He has worked as an outdoor educator, guided wilderness trips in Europe and the Pacific Northwest, and serves as a volunteer Scout leader. Michael has served as a pacer for Big River Running Company’s half and full marathon training team. He enjoys talking with other runners and helping them reach their goals.
