Melissa didn’t start running until she was an adult. She started by just walking out her front door and taking it one step at a time. She knows what it feels like to be a back of the packer as well as closer to the middle. Being a goal-oriented person, she’s run lots of races. She’s completed 50 (soon to be 50+) half marathons and 20+ full marathons, not to mention everything from 1milers to 15k’s. And she races as often as she can. Her favorite distance is the half marathon. It is challenging, but not doesn’t require as much of a time commitment that fulls do. She has 3 girls, and is a therapeutic foster parent, so time is a premium. She loves to run races because of the energy of the other runners and the volunteers. She likes to encourage other people to run, during races and in every day life. And she believes everyone is valuable just they way they are, no matter how fast or slow. She believes that running is, indeed, a metaphor for life. There are challenges, new roads, highs and lows, and new goals to attain. One of her favorite memories from a half marathon when she didn’t think she could finish, was when a lady said to her that she would get to the finish, so long as she kept on going no matter what. It didn’t matter how long it took. It just mattered that she kept moving forward. And, that has been her motto ever since… Keep Moving Forward. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, and it doesn’t matter how far you go. Just being out there and encouraging each other to be better each day, or each run, is what is most important. Oh, and having fun along the way doesn’t hurt, either!
