Besides swim team in high school, Donald had never participated actively in sports until his junior year at BYU. He signed up for a month-long event called the Lazy Man Ironman, where each participant had to complete the entire Ironman distance over 31 days. After finishing, he considered training for and participating in a real Ironman one day. After some very brief consideration of how to properly prepare himself, he signed up for his first running race ever, the Salt Lake City Marathon…7 weeks before the event. That weekend he went on a 20 mile run, miraculously without injury. Two weekends later, another 20 mile run. Then it was time to taper. After finishing the race “with only a few miles of walking” he was hooked. Several years later, he knows not to go on a 20 mile run without properly building up mileage. His current goal is to run “sub-3” in the marathon.
